Whisky Words: Barrel

Vic Cameron, one of our whisky lecturers says: “A barrel is a type of cask. It's the cask we get from America. It's used for making bourbon and it holds 200 litres of spirit. And it's always made from American oak. A barrel is different from a cask and is a type of cask. So there's lots of different types of casks, there's barrels, there's hogsheads, there's puncheons, there's butts, for example. So all these different types are casks.”
