Bunnahabhain
Bunnahabhain Distillery is a Scottish single malt whisky distillery located on the northeastern coast of Islay, overlooking the Sound of Islay. While Islay is renowned for its peaty and maritime whiskies, Bunnahabhain offers something a little different; whiskies that are lighter and perhaps more approachable style.
History
Bunnahabhain Distillery was founded in 1881 by the Islay Distillery Company, during a period of whisky boom in Scotland. The distillery was established to provide employment for local residents and to meet the growing demand for whisky. Bunnahabhain has changed hands multiple times throughout its history. It is currently owned by Distell Group Limited, a South African-based company.
Production Style & Core Range
Bunnahabhain whiskies are known for their unpeated or lightly peated character, which sets them apart from many other Islay whiskies. The spirit is typically matured in a variety of cask types, including ex-bourbon barrels and sherry casks. Bunnahabhain offers a core range of expressions: Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old, Bunnahabhain 18 Year Old, and Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair, each offering a different perspective on the distillery's unique character.
Visitor Experience
Bunnahabhain Distillery has a visitor centre that welcomes whisky enthusiasts. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the whisky-making process, explore the historic distillery buildings and enjoy tastings of Bunnahabhain whiskies while taking in the scenic views of the surrounding coastline. Kirsty says: "It's a lovely distillery with incredible views, the new visitor centre has a lovely deck on the ocean." Nice.
