Glen Moray
Oct 23, 2025
Glen Moray distillery is located in Elgin on the banks of the River Lossie. It is a Speyside single malt, producing whisky under its own name as well as contributing malt to blends.
It was founded in 1897 by the Glen Moray Glenlivet Distillery Company, which was a partnership of local whisky merchants. The distillery was built on the site of a former brewery and has a rich history. In 2008, Glen Moray was sold to the French company La Martiniquaise.
EWA Teacher, Vic Cameron, says: “It’s a lovely distillery and is really being pushed and advertised by the owners. It's a good seller and sits at a great price point. You can expect a light, fresh, fruity Speyside, normally ex-bourbon but they are doing some amazing whiskies with cask finishes; sherry, port, Madeira, cognac, so look out for all the new expressions coming out.”

House Style & Core Range
Glen Moray whiskies are known for their approachable and versatile character. The distillery offers age-statement whiskies (12, 15, 18, 21 years) as well as non-age statement finishes.
Of the typical house style, Emma Ware, Glen Moray's Visitor Centre Manager says: "Glen Moray is just classic Speyside. We're light and fruity but because of the size of our stills, we have this really lovely sort of creaminess to our spirit and that carries really well into cask maturation as well."

Experimental Releases
In addition to its core range, Glen Moray has experimented with wine-cask finishes (e.g the Chardonnay finish featured in the video above) and others including sherry, port and rum. Due to the varied range and excellent price point, Glen Moray is perfect for exploring a range of different finishes. As Vic says: "In the mid twenties for a bottle like this, you can go in and get four of them for a hundred quid and then have practice at home."

Visitor Centre
Glen Moray has a visitor centre and cafe that welcomes whisky enthusiasts. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the whisky-making process, explore the historic distillery buildings and enjoy tastings of Glen Moray whiskies while learning about the brand's heritage.

Vic says: "As part of the tour, they take you into the warehouse and then they'll open up a madeira cask, a port cask, a rum cask... so you can put your nose in, smell the differences and feel the casks. It's a great tour and a lovely experience."
