Meet the Educator: Philip Schnier

We’re delighted to welcome Philip Schnier, Founder of MacRae’s Whisky, as our Approved Course Provider in Stuttgart, Germany. Originally from the Scottish Highlands, Philip brings his heritage, professional experience and infectious enthusiasm for whisky education to students across Germany.

In Philip's Words

I grew up on the Black Isle, surrounded by barley fields and just a stone’s throw from some of Scotland’s best distilleries. That early connection to whisky country stayed with me, even after moving to Germany nine years ago. My professional background is in engineering and manufacturing, always with a strong focus on training. Alongside this, I started running whisky tastings in local spirits shops, which quickly expanded to teaching seminars at Volkshochschulen (adult education centres) and now with the Edinburgh Whisky Academy.

In many ways, I see myself as an unofficial ambassador for Scotland. Through whisky, I can share a piece of my homeland with others while helping them understand the craftsmanship, culture, and history behind each dram.

From student to educator

Like most whisky lovers, I started out eager to learn as much as possible. Over the past decade, I’ve completed numerous courses, certifications, and diplomas in whisky and spirits, and it feels natural to now pass that knowledge on. Having taught in my previous career, the transition to whisky education was seamless—and incredibly rewarding.

What I love most is watching students grow in confidence. Some arrive unsure of what to expect, but by the end of the course they’ve not only expanded their knowledge but also discovered their own voice in how they experience whisky. That transformation is what makes teaching so fulfilling.

Why Edinburgh Whisky Academy

For me, the Academy represents everything whisky education should be: quality, reliability and enjoyment. With courses approved and annually verified by the SQA, students can be confident they’re learning from content created and reviewed by true industry experts.

The material is rigorous yet engaging, with an emphasis on learning in a fun, approachable way. Whisky is serious in its craftsmanship, but it should never be intimidating—and the Academy’s global community of educators ensures that students everywhere have access to clear, trustworthy information.

Advice for whisky enthusiasts

If you’re curious about whisky or even considering a career in the industry, my advice is simple: immerse yourself. Read books, listen to podcasts, visit distilleries, attend tastings and festivals, and join local societies. Don’t be afraid to ask questions—whether to bar staff, brand reps, or fellow enthusiasts. Most importantly, reflect on your own strengths and think about where you could best contribute. There are many paths into the whisky industry, and building a strong foundation of knowledge is the first step.
