If you've never been to a whisky tasting before, you might wonder what all the fuss is about. Is it only for enthusiasts? Will everyone else know more than you? Do you need to know how to describe flavours before you walk through the door?
The answer to all three questions is no.
We asked some of our teachers and contributing experts a simple question:
Why should someone give a whisky tasting a go?
Their answers all point to the same thing: whisky tastings aren't about being an expert. They're about discovering something new, sharing experiences and having fun.

"Most of us enjoy things in a binary way; either I like it or I don't. Once you learn where flavours come from, you get to enjoy things for what they are and that's where you can enjoy a broader range of different types of whiskies."
A tasting helps you move beyond simply deciding whether you like a whisky. You begin to understand why it tastes the way it does and that opens the door to discovering styles you may never have considered before.
It Doesn't Have to be That Deep
Ask EWA Teacher Vic Cameron why you should attend a whisky tasting and his answer is straight to the point:
"Because it's great fun and whisky tastes fantastic. It's obvious!"
Sometimes that's all the reason you need.

Whisky writer Dave Broom believes the best tastings offer much more than what's in the glass.
"Because you will have great fun and meet new people and discover a drink which you will love for the rest of your life."
That's the beauty of a whisky tasting. You might discover a new favourite distillery. You might leave with a better understanding of flavour. You might make new friends or hear stories you'll remember for years to come.
Whatever happens, you'll almost certainly leave with a greater appreciation for one of the world's most fascinating spirits.
So... Why Not? You don't need experience. You don't need a trained palate. You don't need to know the "right" answers. All you need is an open mind and a willingness to explore.
