Meet the Educator: Gillian Kirkland
We’re delighted to welcome Gillian Kirkland as our Approved Course Provider in Glasgow. Gillian runs the much-loved Piper Whisky Bar, where she will now be teaching our Level 1 Certificate courses right in the heart of the city.
Gillian has worked in the hospitality trade for over a decade, but it was her decision to transform her bar into a whisky bar that truly changed her career path. “When I made the decision, I knew very little about whisky,” she explains. “So, I threw myself into anything and everything - books, bars, tastings, courses, people - and realised I LOVED IT. I developed a passion for it and have never looked back.”
Her dedication to learning led her to complete the Edinburgh Whisky Academy’s Diploma in Single Malt Whisky in 2018, where she found inspiration in the teaching itself. “I always admired those who could both talk about whisky and educate at the same time. After doing the Diploma, I thought… I’d like to do that.”
For Gillian, teaching is about sharing that same sense of discovery she felt. “People love to learn. When you’re younger it can feel like a chore, but when you find your passion and really immerse yourself in it, it becomes a pleasure.”
A long-time supporter of the Academy, she values the seriousness and recognition that formal whisky education brings. “EWA took it seriously and allowed individuals to gain a qualification. It gives whisky and gin the recognition they deserve and encourages others to learn more.”
Gillian’s Advice for Aspiring Whisky Enthusiasts:
“Do your homework. Read the books, go to tastings, visit distilleries and events, and listen to those around you. Whisky and gin aren’t going anywhere, so if you have an interest, pursue it—you’ll love it.”
