Highland Park
Highland Park is one of Scotland's most storied and respected single malt Scotch whisky distilleries. Located in tin Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands, it is known for its distinctive whiskies that combine a balance of sweetness, maltiness and peat smoke. It is currently the northernmost whisky distillery in Scotland.
History & Ownership
The distillery was founded in 1798, although illicit distilling on the site predates this. Officially established by Magnus Eunson, a local butcher and church officer, the distillery has a rich history intertwined with the traditions and heritage of the Orkney Islands. Highland Park is owned by Edrington, a leading international premium spirits company that is also home to brands such as The Macallan and The Famous Grouse.
Production Style & Core Range
Highland Park is known for its balanced approach to whisky making. The distillery uses traditional floor maltings and locally sourced peat from Hobbister Moor, which imparts the distinctive smoky character. The spirit is aged in a combination of American oak and European oak casks, often seasoned with sherry, contributing to its complexity and depth.
In terms of the core range, there is Highland Park 12 Year Old (the flagship expression, known for its harmonious balance of sweet honey, rich fruit and aromatic peat smoke). Highland Park 18 Year Old (a more mature whisky with deeper flavours of toffee, dried fruit and spices, balanced by gentle smokiness). There is also the Highland Park 21 Year Old (known for its rich, full-bodied profile with notes of dark chocolate, nuts and smoky wood). And, finally, Highland Park 25 Year Old (a luxurious expression with complex layers of dried fruit, spices and sweet peat.)
Highland Park embraces its Norse heritage, reflected in its branding, packaging and marketing. Orkney's history as part of the Viking territories influences the names and stories behind many of Highland Park's whiskies.
